Is it bad to listen to music while doing homework or studying?

I don’t know, I guess it sort of distracts you a bit… but not really. Watching TV isn’t that great, because it really distracts you, but I don’t see anything wrong with listening to music… I do it all the time!

From my experience, if you’re trying to retain anything, you shouldn’t listen to music. Examples include studying material that you need to know for a test or doing anything that is important to know later.
If you’re doing something like math homework or just busy work, you can listen to music. I always listen to music when doing math homework, but never when studying. The only music I can listen to when studying is instrumental stuff with no lyrics.

It all depends on your level of concentation. Some people need quiet, some people can’t concentrate in silence. If you have good focus while music is on, more power to you. It can really enhance your understanding in some subjects if you do homework/study to the right song.

no, i do it all the time. i like to listen to classical or jazz when studying because it is not too distracting.

Depends on the music. Some studies show that classical music played at a low level ( like soft background music) can actually help you remember things. You could try researching the “Mozart effect” phenomenon. Just make sure you realize that not all these studies are actually 100% factual. But I used to listen to classical music when I studied math or went over notes for a test. It helped a bit actually. Seemed I could calm my nerves about the test better.

it’s not really “bad” but its nto really “good” either
studies show that ppl that do their hmwrk while doing other stuff like watching TV, talking to ppl, or listening to music do their homework in MORE time than they wud if they were concentrating on jsut ONE thing….basically it slwos you down.
multitasking always slows u down bcuz ur brain is contantly switching back and forth and that tires it a bit
so bascially listening to music will only slow you down a bit…but it usually wont affect ur quality.

Everybody is different. Bringing up my six children, two of them needed silence whilst doing homework or studying, three of them could not study WITHOUT loud music on. The sixth one studied with very quite classical playing. Every one of them passed grades and did well at school.
To each his own. You just have to find out which way is best for you.

i learned in my psychology class that yes it is bad to be doing homework/ and or studying while listening to music. this is because the human brain can only focus all its attention on something for roughly 20 minutes, without any interferences…and it does take a lot of energy to give full attention to something.
and since you play music, you pay attention to the music too, and don’t concentrate fully on your studying.
also, if you do this, you will only skim over the words, and most likely forget a lot of what you read when your done and if you do this, what ever you read will only make it into your short term memory, and then it will disappear very quickly, because you didn’t actually function in your brain the information that you were receiving, you just skimmed through it.

Yes! For hours I’ve been trying to finish my homework, but I can’t because I’m listening to Incubus and on Y!A! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
